Our receptionist Karen has a new puppy and we are going to follow her progress for the next few months. Here is what Karen has to say about making the decision to get a new puppy.
Getting a new puppy is very exciting and I should know because I bought my new baby, Poppy home on Saturday, 16th January, 2010. Here is the background to her story:
I have a love of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel breed and have had 2 boys, a beautiful tricolour called Charlie, who sadly died 2 years ago in February and a very handsome black and tan called Chester who will be 2 years old in April. I felt the time was right for him to have some company at home, as he is such a sweet natured dog and loves his playdates with his own kind. I therefore waited patiently for my breeder to have her next litter and expressed my interest in a ruby girl before they were even born!
For any of you considering getting a puppy, choosing the right breed for your lifestyle is of utmost importance as is finding a reputable breeder. Each breed has its own health issues to consider so if you're buying a pedigree dog, it is important to check both parents are free from problems which could be passed on to their pups.
I would always recommend talking at length to your chosen breeder and where possible seeing the Mum and the Dad of the litter before purchasing your puppy. Usually the Mum is with the litter so this is easy, Dad not so, but you may be shown a photograph at least. A puppy should not be taken from Mum before 8 weeks of age, when it will be fully weaned.
Please remember everyone loves a cute puppy but they grow up! They are a lifetime commitment not just a bundle of fun for a few months. They are very time consuming and demand a lot of your attention. Have you got time for that? And patience....lots of patience needed in puppy training to get a happy, well-adjusted dog.
There is obviously the financial commitment to consider too. It doesn't stop with the initial purchase price! There are the annual vaccinations, monthly flea treatments and quarterly worming treatments as standard. Not to mention food, pet insurance, kennel fees and vet consultations should anything happen.
Of course, its not all about money! The joy a dog can give you is priceless. They soon become a much loved member of your family and give immeasurable pleasure. I can highly recommend it.
Please continue to read this blog at regular intervals for photos and progress reports on Poppy. Our aim is to make it both enjoyable and informative.
